*Hold on, this is a TL;DR post so kindly move along to the bottom of the post for the summary if you are not interested to read.
So in the last post we talked about Lucasfilm's ILMxLAB is currently collaborating with a company called Magic Leap to use their technology and bring the world of Star Wars to real life. The demo videos was ambiguous, although it looked impressive.
Which brings us to a question.. What is the Augmented Reality technology that powers Magic Leap company?
A journalist for MIT Technology Review, Rachel Metz, was able to get a hands-on test drive on the prototype. She describe the experience as

She mentioned "electronics and lenses" which hint a clue that this prototype could be something like an Augmented Reality version of Oculus Rift or just another Microsoft HoloLens. However, during her test drive she also mentioned
So there is definitely something unique to this piece of tech that they are making as oppose to the conventional 3D stereoscopic method. They also describe the technology as "Dynamic Digitized Lightfield Signal (TM)". Hold on a sec, we are not rocket scientist, can anyone explain this to us?
Fortunately, RoadtoVR.com, managed to come up with an explanation of "Dynamic Digitized Lightfield Signal (TM)" on their website. Check out this link if you want to know how it really works: DDLS explanation
For those who are into more technical details, you can refer to the patent filed by Magic Leap in this link: Patent
Also, according to RoadtoVR website, in the economic standpoint they seem to be very confident as they reportedly have got Google's current CEO, Sundar Pichai, on board with the board of directors for the Series B prototype with an investment of $524 million! Talking about impressive.
So at the end of the day, here is what we know about this Magic Leap technology
- It is going to be some kind of a wearable device in the form of goggles
- It is based on the technology patented by Magic Leap called "Dynamic Digitized Lightfield Signal (TM)"
- Google invested a $524 million on the series B prototype and was led by Google's CEO itself
That is all for today's TL;DR post and I hope all of you who read this enjoyed reading this. As always, do you have any other opinions about this tech? Please comment down below and until next time, we shall meet again.
